Middle East and Africa Hotel Development Pipeline For May 2014 Increases to 589 Hotels
The Middle East/Africa hotel region reported 589 hotels Under Contract totalling 137,784 rooms, according to the May 2014 STR Global Construction Pipeline Report. The Under Contract data includes projects in the In Construction, Final Planning and Planning stages but does not include projects in the Unconfirmed stage.
Among the Chain Scale segments, the Upper Upscale segment accounted for the largest portion of rooms Under Contract with 35.8 percent and 49,260 rooms.
Mövenpick Hotel Casablanca Announced

Hotel Occupancy in the Middle East And Africa Region Up 1.9% to 63.5% for May 2014
The Middle East/Africa region reported positive performance results during April 2014 when reported in U.S. dollars, according to data compiled by STR Global.
The region reported a 1.9-percent increase in occupancy to 63.5 percent, a 3.1-percent increase in average daily rate to US$154.14 and a 5.1-percent increase in revenue per available room to US$97.94.
“Bahrain is currently showing the highest growth in terms of occupancy (+27.8 percent), though the country is coming from a low base in 2013”, said Elizabeth Winkle, managing director of STR Global.
Meliá Hotels Opens Two Red Sea Resorts in Egypt
Meliá Hotels International continues to grow in the resort hotel segment with the opening of two hotels in Red Sea region of Egypt which will join the portfolio of the newly-renovated Sol Hotels & Resorts brand. The new Sol Taba and Sol Dahab will be opened in July with a total of 657 rooms.
