Kenya rallies to increase Trade

Kenya’s trade with South Korea has increased from $3.6million in 2007 to $5.5 million in 2012, a 65% growth rate. Exports to South Korea include coffee, printed matter, scrap metal, gemstones, pyrethrum, wood products, handicraft, beer, tobacco, raw vegetables and sea food.

Though a significant increase was recorded, there is a massive gap that provides opportunities for Kenyan exporters. Trade flow analysis indicates that cut flowers, tin ores and concentrates are among high potential products for export to Korea.

Over the past four decades, South Korea with a population of 48 million, has emerged as an economic powerhouse in Asia and to the rest of the world. In 2004 South Korea joined the trillion dollar club of world economies.

Kenya is on a mission to brand the country as a prime tourist destination and trade partner, at the on going World Expo 2012 in Yeosu, Korea. The theme of the Expo is “The living Ocean and Coast, Diversity of Resources and sustainable activities”

Kenya is among 108 countries and international organizations invited by the Government of South Korea to participate in the in the Expo 2012. The World Expo seeks to demonstrate sustainable socio- economic activities in the coast lines and to bring to the fore, the importance of conservation of the coastal environments.
